Second Harvest

The mission of Second Harvest Food Bank of Northeast Tennessee is to feed the hungry by securing and distributing food and grocery products to non-profit agencies that provide services to the needy, ill, and elderly in the eight-county region of Northeast Tennessee.

Recipient agencies served by Second Harvest include qualified not-for-profit agencies and churches that provide food at no cost to needy individuals.  Agencies served include: emergency food pantries, soup kitchens, abuse shelters, daycare centers, after-school programs and public housing communities.

During 2006, Second Harvest, located in Gray, TN, distributed 3.6 million pounds of food to 200 agencies that served 25,000 people every month.  The population of the eight county areas we serve is 475,000+.
"    14.3% of our population is living at or below the poverty level.  This equals approximately 68,000 people.
"    19.8% of those living at or below the poverty level are children.  This is approximately 25,000 hungry children in our area!
"    In a given month, approximately 25,000 individuals receive food assistance from Second Harvest Food Bank partner agencies.

Our Saviour Lutheran Church has been approved to get USDA foods free for the Melting Pot.  Other items can be purchased for a nominal fee.
